Kids Crafts: Not just for Orioles–the Pretty Bird Sweet Shop

Posted by Sue

Sylvia and Leonard, those are the names I gave my orioles. They live in a tree on my boulevard in their nest. Have you ever seen an oriole nest? They are one of the neatest bird nests, they look like a woven sack swinging from a tree branch.

Orioles are beautiful birds too, they are a bright orange and black mixture. Leonard has the brightest colors and Sylvia is duller in coloration.

Sylvia and Leonard come to my yard every day to eat. What do orioles eat you might ask? They love fruits such as apples, oranges, and pretty much all berries. They like nectar too. You can make your own with a sugar water mixture, 1 part sugar to 5 parts water, heat to boiling then let it cool. Once you’ve finished making your nectar, you can put it in a shallow dish or a specially designed oriole feeder with drinking spouts.

But, oriole’s favorite treat is grape jelly, they love it!  I have a feeder my husband Wayne designed and it holds two containers for jelly and has a dowel in the middle to put a half orange or apple on. I love this feeder because the orioles are really attracted to it, as well as many of other bird–That’s why I came up with name, Pretty Bird Sweet Shop.

Wayne and I thought it would be fun to share his design in a kit, which will be available in our store right now! The kit comes with everything you need to create some great family memories. The birds will be thrilled too, when they discover a Pretty Bird Sweet Shop in your yard. Just make sure to keep plenty of grape jelly and oranges on hand.

Have fun family crafting and creating AND bird watching!
