One of Sophia’s favorite things to do is be in the garden. She loves weeding with her Grandma, planting with her dad and harvesting with anyone who will let her pick or dig. Alex is less of an an enthusiast, but he does enjoy getting his hands dirty for some tasty produce.
I’m glad my kids have the opportunity to experience food straight from the ground. I myself grew up with a huge garden. As you see the pictures in this post (and on flickr.com if you want more), you will see my Dad and kids in my Dad’s garden this year (July 2012). This year’s garden is actually smaller than the one I remember growing up. We always had corn, beans, peas, pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes, strawberries, raspberries and I’m sure I’m forgetting something. Despite the constant involvement in planting, harvesting and preserving as a child, I don’t have the greenest of thumbs. I still try though, with our little patio herb garden; And, someday when we have a house again, I’m sure I’ll grow a few veggies, too!
Another garden benefit and family gardening fact, both Alex and Soph seem to magically like all veggies from their garden. This includes green beans, which seem to be the food of the devil when they are purchased from the grocery store, frozen!
We hope you enjoy the pics of one of our family gardens AND, if you have a family garden, please share some pics with us over at our Facebook Page!
