There are so many reasons to be thankful this season, whether you celebrate holidays or not. Just think of all the lovely toys, games and sweets you may be receiving in December….how exciting and wonderful! I also like to think the winter weather brings out the best in all of us. I see people helping each other out all the time; it makes my heart glow and brings a smile to my face-‘Tis the season of giving!
I thought it would be nice to have some ideas ready for you to be kind and helpful to your community. Here are some good deeds that will make you feel fantastic–I don’t know about you, but I always get a warm and happy sensation running through me when I help someone out. It feels awesome! Let’s give it a try together!
- Give to your local food shelf. Food is one of the greatest gifts you can bestow! Put together a bag with all the ingredients for your favorite meal. Keep it simple and nourishing. Remember that people have different diets, so it is good to keep it vegetarian.
- Sponsor a family who may need a little help with gifts for the holidays. I did this through my local community center when I lived in Washingto,n DC. They gave me a list of items a family needed such as basic toiletries and a few fun gifts on the family’s "Wish List". Through a few donations from friends who wanted to help, too, I was able to buy their son a bike!
- Give to your local clothing center. Winters are bitter cold for most of us around the globe. If you have any gently worn sweaters, winter coats, scarves, hats and gloves, give them to a clothing center. Believe me, they are needed. Blankets and quilts are welcome, too.
- Donate your time to a charity or an organization. Time is so valuable all year long! If you live in a city, consider working at a soup kitchen every month. Clothing centers need volunteers to sort through donations. Nursing homes and hospitals need volunteers, too. All you have to do is ask-isn’t that easy?!
I really can’t think of a better gift than the gift of giving. And, the best part is that giving makes you truly appreciate what you have. There are lots of people who need a little help every once in awhile. It is extremely gratifying to help out and brighten someone’s day. Throughout the year we accumulate loads of things; think about what you need and what could possibly be donated.
Whenever I get samples of shampoos or soaps, I put them in a bag in my closet. I also save free gifts that I receive at stores like scarf and glove sets that I know I don’t need. Plus, I buy baby formula, diapers and pet food sometimes when they are on sale. I don’t have children or a pet, but I know these items are generally expensive and that someone NEEDS them! When my donation bag is full I head to my local shelter and GIVE!! Won’t you join me in helping the world out this season?
Happy Holidays Everyone!
P.S. Let us know your favorite way to give during the holidays–and year round!
