Kids Crafts: Sophia’s Christmas Tree Pine Cones

Posted by the Mom (aka Kelly Biedny)

Today I’m sharing another one of Sophia’s creations.  She came up with this idea during a pine-cone phase she had in September (that’s when she designed the Pine Cone Mobile, too).  When she showed me her little Christmas tree creations, I immediately fell in love with them.  They are simple and so cute!

Sophia used a variety of mediums to decorate her pine cone trees, but you can use lots of things you have on hand. Here are some basic instructions for creating your own Christmas Tree Pine Cone:

What you need:
Pine Cones, Glue (hot glue gun or white glue), Glitter, beads, pipe cleaners, small stones, buttons, any small shiny objects that can be glued.

Step 1: Pick out a Pine Cone
Select a pine cone to decorate. It’s best to use the kinds with firmer ‘leaves’ and that stand up (like the ones in our picture).

Step 2: Pick out your decorations
Next, decide what type of decorating you want to do by selecting one or two types of items to decorate your pine cone with. It’s best to keep it to just one or two types of things (i.e. pipe cleaner and a few beads, or just small rocks). If you do too many decoration types, your pine cone will look a bit busy.

Step 3: Glue on your decorations
If you chose pipe cleaner, no glue is necessary, just weave the pipe cleaner around your pine cone.  If you choose beads, glitter or rocks, pick spread your glue and stick on the items. For heavier things like rocks and some beads, we recommend hot glue guns.

Step 4: Let it Dry
Once the glue on your pine cone dries, you’re all done!

You can attach hooks to your pine cones and use them as Christmas tree decorations, or just set them in an arrangement on a shelf, like we did. They make a pretty holiday decoration.

Happy Family Holiday Crafting Everyone!

Great pine cone Christmas Trees Sophia. I love pine cone crafts. I used to love to use them as bird feeders with peanut butter and birdseed. We used to wander around the yard gathering pine cones and then decorate with them. Now I’m in the desert and when I wander I find cactus and rocks. Thanks for sharing these over at Real Housemoms for Fabulous Fridays! Hope to see you guys again this week. :)
