Mad Kitchen Science: DIY Lava Lamp

Posted by the Mom (aka Kelly Biedny)

Today we share more of our Mad Kitchen Science adventures from over the holiday break. None of them involved food that you eat–probably because of the all the holiday snacking we were doing–but the did involve stuff from the kitchen. This one is a DIY Lava Lamp from the book Geek Mom. Soph and I had a great time making it and she sat in the bathroom in the dark for about an hour after we completed it, just dropping in antacid pieces watching it bubble-up. And of course we had to keep it–I can’t remember it’s ‘shelf-life’ but we still have ours.

If you want to make your own, here’s what you’ll need:
-Baby Oil
-A Plastic Bottle
-Food Coloring
-Immersible Lights
-Antacids (the kind that fizz in water)
-A Copy of Geek Mom (highly recommended)

Since we did follow Geek Mom’s steps pretty closely, we’re not going to step-by-step this one, but you can see our photos from little experiment below.

Next week we’ll share another fun experiment from the book Geek Mom, which you can tell we are totally loving!

Do you have any Books that you find to be ‘go tos’ for kitchen science? Or, do you prefer to just ‘Google it’?

Happy Mad Kitchen Science-ing!
