Feather Pens and the Fourth of July

Posted by the Mom (aka Kelly Biedny)

So, I (the Mom) LOVE the 4th of July. I love the patriotism, the family celebrations, the food, the sparkly fireworks, I love all of it. But, remembering how it all started is important, too. The very first 4th of July was not about family cook-outs and glittery firework displays…it was about the signing of a very special document that allowed these United States of America to become independent from the British. In honor of the very special signatures on that document, we thought creating a pen that might be similar to the ones used ‘back-in-the-day’ would be lots of fun. Plus, who doesn’t like a feather pen?

I’m sure Mr. John Hancock and the rest didn’t use a Bic pen hot clued into a feather from Michael’s, but they are pretty cool in this day and age.  Here’s how we made ours…

What you need to make your own Feather Pen for the Fourth of July:
– Cheap pen with an easily removable ‘inside’ part. Oh, and one that works!
– A feather with a large feather stem. Small feathers will not work. You can get big ones at Michael’s or JoAnn’s
– Patriotic colored ribbon
– Hot Glue Gun
– Scissors

Step 1: Prepare your pen –
The first thing you’ll have to do is remove the inside part of your pen from the outside.  Keep the outside part for another project (or throw it out if you’re not packrats like us :D)

Step 2: Prepare your feather –
In order for the pen to fit inside the feather steam, you’ll have to trim the end of the feather stem to reveal the hallow part where you’ll insert the pen.  Make sure that the pen fits in the stem; if it doesn’t, trim of a bit more of to get a wider section of the hallow stem. Don’t trim off more than you have to, though, cuz you’ll want as much of the pen to be inserted as possible.

Step 3: Combine feather and pen –
Before inserting the pen into the hallow feather stem, take your glue gun and inject some hot glue into the hallow stem.  Next, stick the pen into the stem.  Excess glue will seep from the edges, so be careful not to burn yourself.

Step 4: Cover pen stem –
To make it all look prettier and more patriotic, wrap the end of the feather stem and top of the pen with your patriotic ribbon.  Place a little glue at one end, attach the ribbon end at that point and then wrap until you have covered the end part of the pen.  Then cut off the ribbon and glue that end down.

Now you have yourself your very own, fancy feather pen!  It’s not exactly like the quill pens that our forefathers used when declaring our independence from Britain, but it will be fun to use.

Happy Independence Day Everyone!
