Pill Kendamas: Look What Alex Made!

Posted by the Mom (aka Kelly Biedny)

This year at Alex and Soph’s schools, kendamas have been the big craze. It started with just plain old kendamas, which are a Japanese toy. There are lots of different tricks you can do with them and kids get pretty good at it after hours of flipping them around. They could be compared to yo-yos I guess.

At the end of the year, Alex brought home a ‘pill’ kendama, which is what’s pictured above. Being the entrepreneur that he is, he decided he could make some and sell ’em. And, since his dad is a carpenter with the necessary tools, they teamed up and whipped out a few. They come in multiple types of wood as you can see; including maple & walnut, maple, oak, cherry and birch. All of them except the birch are finished…the birch you can decorate yourself. Soph has the birch one and did fancy it all up to meet her specifications.

If you want to see one in action, check out Alex demonstrating it. I apologize for the audio…it’s a bit windy, but you’ll get the idea:

If you’d like your very own, stop by our Two Kids Cooking & More Shop and order one–handmade by Alex (with some help from his Dad).

Do you have any handmade toys that you love? Tell us about ’em!

Happy Kendama-ing!
Kelly, Alex and Sophia
