This year at Alex and Soph’s schools, kendamas have been the big craze. It started with just plain old kendamas, which are a Japanese toy. There are lots of different tricks you can do with them and kids get pretty good at it after hours of flipping them around. They could be compared to yo-yos I guess.
At the end of the year, Alex brought home a ‘pill’ kendama, which is what’s pictured above. Being the entrepreneur that he is, he decided he could make some and sell ’em. And, since his dad is a carpenter with the necessary tools, they teamed up and whipped out a few. They come in multiple types of wood as you can see; including maple & walnut, maple, oak, cherry and birch. All of them except the birch are finished…the birch you can decorate yourself. Soph has the birch one and did fancy it all up to meet her specifications.
