This year the kids and I have lots to be thankful for. Moving into our new home this year has been more than awesome. We finally have a place of our very own where we can paint the walls and decorate however we want. We’ve met lots of new neighborhood friends and my commute…well I have no commute! We are truly thankful for everything we have.
Since this is the time of year when we actively demonstrate our thanks, we decided making a ‘We’re Thankful Board’ to write down everything we’re thankful for would be a great visual reminder of our blessings. Soph and I wrote the ones for the picture, although they are all true, we have even more we’ve added…(if you don’t know what Dota is, ask Alex :)).
If you want to make you’re own family ‘We’re Thankful’ Board, here’s what we did…
What you need:
- A large cool looking frame.
- Some Fall Leaves (fake or real); ours are fake
- Fabric to cover the picture in the frame.
- A hot glue gun.
- Dry erase marker
- Any decorative items you want to use!
Step 1: Remove Old Picture from Frame –
We got our frame at a thrift shop for $5. Thrift stores and garage sales are perfect for finding used frames. Sometimes the picture is less then desirable, but you can always remove it. And remember, if it’s a sturdy frame but an ugly color, just repaint it! Our frame was perfect, except for the picture it contained, so we just bent back the staples holding it in and took it out.
Step 2: Cover or Replace Old Picture –
We used an off-white fabric to cover the picture that was in our frame to leave the blank space for where we write our thanksgiving items. We actually flipped the picture over and wrapped it so the picture wouldn’t show through the fabric. We just stretched it over, gluing each edge and the corners so it was smooth. You could also just replace the picture, using a blank colored piece that goes with the colors you are using.
Step 3: Decorate! –
Our frame had a matted picture that was a burgundy color. It worked perfectly with the look we were going for so we used it to glue our fake fall leaves to. First, Sophia placed the leaves around the edge as we wanted them to be in our final piece. Then she got out the hot glue gun and got down to business, gluing each one in it’s place.
Step 4: Put Everything Back in the Frame –
Carefully place your decorated matting and the covered picture part back into the frame. Bend each of the staples, or whatever is used to hold the backing into the frame.
Step 5: Write Your Thanks –
Using a dry erase marker (or many if you want lots of color). Write ‘We’re Thankful for…’ at the top of your board. Then, everyone from the family can add to the list!
During the Thanksgiving season, display your ‘We’re Thankful’ Board in a place in your home where everyone can see and remember their blessings!
Happy Thanksgiving Season Everyone!
